Pulmonary embolism (PE) is the third leading cause of cardiovascular mortality in the United States.  However, every patient with acute PE does not require hospitalization, and with proper selection and risk stratification some patients can be safely and effectively treated as an outpatient.  Included on this website is a toolkit of information that family, internal medicine and emergency room physicians will find useful to develop a PE diagnosis and treatment pathway. These tools can be used to develop protocols to approach patients with suspected PE as well identify those who can be treated as an outpatient.
